Virender Sehwag on Sachin Tendulkar

Tendulkar controls the game
What are the things that set the great man apart from mere mortals? The ability to read the game acutely, pick the ball early, dedication, discipline and more

The first time Virender Sehwag met Sachin Tendulkar was in March 2001, at a practice session ahead of the first ODI of the home series against Australia. For Sehwag, Tendulkar was the man who had inspired him to skip exams in school and allowed him to dream of cricket as a career. Sehwag was shy then, and didn't speak to his hero. He got 58 off 51 balls and picked up three wickets. Tendulkar later walked up to him and said, "You've got talent. Continue playing the same way and I'm sure you will make your name." That ability to motivate youngsters is one of the traits, Sehwag says, that makes Tendulkar special. Here he tells Cricinfo about 10 things that make Tendulkar stand out.

Discipline
He never comes late to any practice session, never comes late to the team bus, never comes late to any meeting - he is always five minutes ahead of time. If you are disciplined, it shows you are organised. And then he is ready for anything on the cricket field.

Mental strength
I've learned a lot of things from him as far as mental strength goes - on how to tacke a situation, how to tackle a ball or bowler. If you are not tough mentally, you can't score the number of runs and centuries he has in the last two decades. He is a very good self-motivator.

He always said to me: whatever the situation or whichever the bowler you face, always believe in yourself. There was this occasion in South Africa, early in my career, when I was not scoring runs fluently, so he suggested I try a few mental techniques that had worked for him. One of the things he said was: Always tell yourself you are better than others. You have some talent and that is why you are playing for India, so believe in yourself.

Picking the ball early
He can pick the ball earlier than other batsmen and that is a mark of a great batsman. He is virtually ready for the ball before it is bowled. Only great players can have two shots for one ball, like Tendulkar does, and a big reason is that he picks the ball very early.

Soft hands
I've never seen him play strokes with hard hands. He always tries to play with soft hands, always tries to meet the ball with the centre of the bat. That is timing. I have never been able to play consistently with soft hands.

Planning
One reason he can convert his fifties into hundreds is planning: which bowler he should go after, which bowler he should respect, in which situation he should play aggressively, in which situation he should defend. It is because he has spent hours thinking about all of it, planning what to do. He knows what a bowler will do in different situations and he is ready for it.

In my debut Test he scored 155 and he knew exactly what to do every ball. We had already lost four wickets (68 for 4) when I walked in, and he warned me about the short ball. He told me that the South African fast bowlers would bowl short-of-length balls regularly, but he knew how to counter that. If they bowled short of a length, he cut them over slips; when they bowled outside off stump, he cut them; and when they tried to bowl short into his body, he pulled with ease. Luckily his advice had its effect on me, and I made my maiden hundred!

Adaptability
This is one area where he is really fast. And that is because he is such a good reader of the game. After playing just one or two overs he can tell you how the pitch will behave, what kind of bounce it has, which length is a good one for the batsman, what shots to play and what not to.
A good example was in the Centurion ODI of the 2006-07 series. India were batting first. Shaun Pollock bowled the first over and fired in a few short-of-length balls, against which I tried to play the back-foot punch. Tendulkar cautioned me immediately and said that

Making bowlers bowl to his strengths
He will leave a lot of balls and give the bowler a false sense of security, but the moment it is pitched up to the stumps or closer to them, Tendulkar will easily score runs.

If the bowler is bowling outside off stump Tendulkar can disturb his line by going across outside off stump and playing to midwicket. He puts doubts in the bowler's mind, so that he begins to wonder if he has bowled the wrong line and tries to bowl a little outside off stump - which Tendulkar can comfortably play through covers.

In Sydney in 2004, in the first innings he didn't play a single cover drive, and remained undefeated on 241. He decided to play the straight drive and flicks, so he made the bowlers pitch to his strengths. It is not easy. In the Test before that, in Melbourne, he had got out trying to flick. After that when we had a chat he said he was getting out playing the cover drive and the next game he would avoid the cover drive. I thought he was joking because nobody cannot not play the cover drive - doesn't matter if you are connecting or not. I realised he was serious in Sydney when he was on about 180-odd and he had missed plenty of opportunities to play a cover drive. I was stunned.

Ability to bat in different gears
This is one aspect of batting I have always discussed with Tendulkar: how he controls his game; the way he can change gears after scoring a half-century. Suddenly he scores 10-12 runs an over, or maybe a quick 30 runs in five overs, and then again slows down and paces his innings.

He has maintained that it all depends on the team's position. If you are in a good position you tend to play faster. He also pointed out that the batsman must always think about what can happen if he gets out and the consequences for the team. The best example is the knock of 175. I was confident he would pull it off for India and he almost did.

Building on an innings
I learned from Tendulkar how to get big hundreds. He told me early on that once you get a hundred you are satisfied for yourself. But it is also the best time to convert that into a bigger score for the team because then the team will be in a good position.

If you look at my centuries they have always been big. A good instance of this was in Multan in 2004, when he told me I had given away a good position in Melbourne (195) the previous year and the team lost, and I needed to keep that in mind against Pakistan. In Multan, in the first hundred of the triple century I had hit a few sixes. He walked up to me after I reached the century and said he would slap me if I hit any further sixes. I said why. He said that if I tried hitting a six and got out the team would lose the control over the game, and I needed to bat through the day. So I didn't hit a single six till I reached 295. By then India were 500-plus and I told him I was going to hit a six!

Dedication
This is the most important aspect of his success. In his life cricket comes first. When he is on tour he is thinking about nothing but cricket, and when he is not on tour he dedicates quality time to his family. That shows his dedication to the game and to his family. He has found the right balance.

The World will End In 2012

Several experts from across the globe are predicting that the earth is likely to end by the year 2012. The reason could be a human effect or natural disaster. From Chinese theories to scientific predictions the most likely date is the year 2012

SCIENTIFIC EXPERTS from around the world are predicting that five years from now, all life on Earth could well come to an end. Some are saying it’ll be humans that would set it off. Others believe that a natural phenomenon will be the cause. And the religious folks are saying it’ll be God himself who would press the stop button. The following are some likely arguments as to why the world would end by the year 2012.
Reason one: Mayan calendar

Reason one: Mayan calendar
The first to predict 2012 as the end of the world were the Mayans, a bloodthirsty race that were good at two things -- building highly accurate astrological equipment out of stone and sacrificing virgins.

Thousands of years ago they managed to calculate the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days, only 34 seconds out. The Mayan calendar predicts that the earth will end on December 21, 2012. Given that they were pretty close to the mark with the lunar cycle, it’s likely they’ve got the end of the world right as well.

Reason two: Sun storms

Solar experts from around the world monitoring the sun have made a startling discovery. Our sun is in a bit of strife. The energy output of the sun is, like most things in nature, cyclic and it’s supposed to be in the middle of a period of relative stability. However, recent solar storms have been bombarding the earth with lot of radiation energy. It’s been knocking out power grids and destroying satellites. This activity is predicted to get worse and calculations suggest it’ll reach its deadly peak sometime in 2012.

Reason three: The atom smasher

Scientists in Europe have been building the world’s largest particle accelerator. Basically, its a 27 km tunnel designed to smash atoms together to find out what makes the universe tick. However, the mega-gadget has caused serious concern, with some scientists suggesting that it’s properly even a bad idea to turn it on in the first place. They’re predicting all manner of deadly results, including mini black holes. So when this machine is fired up for its first serious experiment in 2012, the world could be crushed into a super-dense blob the size of a basketball.

Reason four: The Bible says it

If having scientists warning us about the end of the world isn’t bad enough, religious folks are getting in on the act as well. Interpretations of the Christian Bible reveal that the date for Armageddon, the final battle between good an evil, has been set for 2012. The I Ching, also known as the Chinese Book of Changes, says the same thing, as do various sections of the Hindu teachings.

Reason five: Super volcano

Yellowstone National Park in United States is famous for its thermal springs and old faithful geyser. The reason for this is simple -- it’s sitting on top of the world’s biggest volcano and geological experts are beginning to get nervous sweats. The Yellowstone volcano has a pattern of erupting every 650,000 years or so, and we’re many years overdue for an explosion that will fill the atmosphere with ash, blocking the sun and plunging the earth into a frozen winter that could last up to 15,000 years. The pressure under the Yellowstone is building steadily, and geologists have set 2012 as a likely date for the big bang.

Reason six: The physicists

This one’s case of bog -- simple maths mathematics. Physicists at Berkely University have been crunching the numbers. They’ve determined that the earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event. Even worse, they’re claiming that their calculations prove that we’re all going to die, very soon. They are also saying that their prediction comes with a certainty of 99 per cent; and 2012 just happens to be the best guess as to when it occurs.

Reason seven: Earth’s magnetic field

We all know the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that shields us from most of the sun’s radiation. What you might not know is that the magnetic poles we call North and South have a nasty habit of swapping places every 750,000 years or so -- and right now we’re about 30,000 years overdue. Scientists have noted that the poles are drifting apart roughly 20-30 kms each year, much faster than ever before, which points to a pole-shift being right around the corner. While the pole shift is under way, the magnetic field is disrupted and will eventually disappear, sometimes for up to 100 years. The result is enough UV outdoors to crisp your skin in seconds, killing everything it touches

Cricketing fraternity lauds Tendulkar

India's cricket fraternity today lavished praise on the country's batting icon Sachin Tendulkar for becoming the first player in the game's history to cross the 17,000-run mark.

Tendulkar, who was chasing the milestone from the onset of the series against Australia, achieved the feat when he, requiring seven runs coming into today's match, played an on-drive to fetch three off pacer Ben Hilfenhaus during the fifth one-dayer in Hyderabad.

"It's really a remarkable achievement. He is one of the best cricketers of the world cricket. I have had some good memories with him, having partnered him for years in one-day cricket," said former India skipper Sourav Ganguly.

The southpaw also wished the little master for the 2011 World Cup, to be co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

"I wish he scores another 2000 runs by 2011 World Cup. Sachin knows best how to accumulate runs. Once he gets going he becomes unstoppable," Ganguly said.

Meanwhile, Mumbai batsman Wasim Jaffer hoped that Tendulkar would also achieve 20,000-run mark.

"He has achieved several records. I hope that he reaches the 20,000-run mark. Whatever he has achieved, it is nearly impossible to achieve for anyone else. I just wish that he keeps on going and gets more and more runs for India," Jaffer said.

Tendulkar reached the milestone in his 435th match and 66th tie against the World Cup holders.

"It's a great achievement. Anyone playing for 21 years is not an easy job, we are proud of him," said batsman Rohit Sharma.

"Sachin has played for 20 odd years and I think, it's wonderful task by a man who has achieved so much. I congratulate him," South Africa cricketer Herchelle Gibbs said.

Tendulkar made a 141-ball 175 in front of the 35,000 strong packed crowd which erupted in joy when Tendulkar reached the magic figure in company of opening partner Virender Sehwag.

Dhoni criticises top order batsmen

Vadodara: Indian captain M.S. Dhoni said that the top order did not get enough runs to sustain the chase against Australia in the first match of the Hero Honda Cup One-Day International series that commenced here on Sunday.

“The top order didn’t get much runs. Among the top six batsmen, there was only one fifty. When you are chasing a big total like this what you really want from the top order is that one of the guys gets a big hundred otherwise you want big partnerships to happen,” Dhoni said.

Dhoni also admitted that the team failed to cash in on the Power Play. “We lost four wickets in the Power Play without cashing in too much but thanks to Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar, we got close.

The four wickets we lost in the Power Play was the turning point,” Dhoni said besides praising Ishant Sharma’s bowling and confirming that Yuvraj Singh will play in the second match at Nagpur on Wednesday.
Bad bowling

Meanwhile, Australian captain Ricky Ponting said that his team’s bowling in the last 10 overs was bad.

“Harbhajan didn’t take the game away from us though he did come close. Our bowling in the last 10 overs was bad. I don’t think that we can be that bad again,” Ponting said.

The Australian skipper praised Peter Siddle’s last over. “Siddle was calm and composed and it will help him in the long run. Shane Watson is one of our better finishers but he had finished his 10 and we gave it to Siddle and he did a good job,” Ponting said.

He added that Brett Lee had a sore elbow that prevented him from bowling his full quota of overs. Ponting also praised Michael Hussey, Tim Paine and Cameron White’s batting.
Preparations hindered

The Australian captain said that the Champions League that concluded on Friday in Hyderabad did hinder his team’s preparations ahead of the current seven-match ODI series against India.

Six of the squad members — Brett Lee, Doug Bollinger, Nathan Hauritz, Cameron White, Peter Siddle and Jon Holland — were busy playing for New South Wales Blues and Victoria Bushrangers before they joined the Australian squad at Vadodara.

“The fact that some of our players joined us last night and day before after the Champions League did hinder our preparations and team tactics. Three of the guys got in last night after half past eight and we took the team bus to the ground at seven in the morning and that hardly gave us any time to discuss and that makes this victory all the more special,” Ponting said

Federer the greatest ever - Lloyd

The Swiss, 27, beat Robin Soderling 6-1 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 to complete his set of Grand Slam titles and equal Pete Sampras's record total of 14.

"He's completed the set and in my opinion he's got to be the greatest player of all time," said Lloyd.

"He's now won on all four surfaces and I think he's going to win more."

Federer joins Fred Perry, Don Budge, Rod Laver, Roy Emerson and Andre Agassi as a winner of all four Grand Slam titles and matches the record total of Sampras, who never managed to win on the clay of Roland Garros.

World number two Federer had lost to Rafael Nadal in the last three French Open finals, as well as the 2005 semi-final, but the Spaniard suffered his first-ever defeat at Roland Garros when Soderling beat him in the fourth round.
Great Britain Davis Cup captain Lloyd says the fact that Federer did not have to beat Nadal does not take the shine off his achievement, and the Swiss will go on to break Sampras's record.

"He just wanted to win this title, he doesn't care who he plays in the final," said Lloyd. "In an ideal world if he played Nadal in the final and won it, great, but he just wants to win the title. He's done that now, we can put it to rest.

"He'll now feel so relieved that he could win three, four, five more before he's finished."

After coming through a titanic struggle in his five-set semi-final win over Juan Martin del Potro, Federer was never troubled by Soderling as he took his head-to-head record against the Swede to 10-0.

"The way Federer took him apart in that first set was just magnificent," said Lloyd. "He came out and played like it was the first round and not the final where he was about to make history by winning all four Grand Slams. It was quite remarkable.

"I thought he might get a little bit more nervous but the first set was the best he played in the whole tournament.

"He knew he had a 9-0 record against Soderling and had only lost one set in those matches, and he thought 'I'm going to dominate from the first point to make sure you have no chance to get into the match', and that's what he did.

"Federer knows that Soderling is dangerous when playing his best, and these two weeks he's gone up three levels mainly because the mental side of his game has improved dramatically.

"He was a big threat. Federer would have been wary of the pace of his shots and thought he would have to play well, but he played brilliantly - job done."

And Federer now heads to Wimbledon looking to regain the title he lost to Nadal in last year's epic final, something Lloyd is backing the Swiss to achieve as the Spaniard has pulled out of next week's Queen's Club event with a knee injury.

"I would put Federer as the favourite for Wimbledon now after the way he's won the French and looked so convincing," said the former Australian Open finalist.

"Nadal didn't play well here, although there may have been an injury, but he didn't look particularly good from the first round and we don't know how bad his knee is.

"I would think that without Nadal having any grass-court play going into Wimbledon you would have to put the favourite's tag back on Federer."

India’s first Test series win in New Zealand in 41 years

WELLINGTON: India’s first Test series win in New Zealand in 41 years is a big achievement but it set a benchmark that future teams would have to live up to, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said on Tuesday.

“You have set the benchmark and the next time you come to New Zealand, people expect you to win,” Dhoni told reporters. “We have achieved something that is big, but the tough part is to maintain it.

“It’s never easy for cricketers. If you have not achieved something there is pressure to do so. Once you have achieved something then there is pressure to sustain it. Nothing is easy. I think it will be tougher for the next guys who come here.”

Though India comprehensively outplayed New Zealand in the first and third Tests, Dhoni was diplomatic when asked if he felt the 1-0 result was a fair reflection of their efforts.

“It’s not what you are getting out of it, it’s how much effort you put in and what you wanted to achieve,” he said.

“3-0 is what you always look for, because there is nothing beyond that. But you have to be comfortable with your target and what you want to achieve.”
Team effort

Dhoni said one of the pleasing aspects of the tour had been the development of the side throughout, and the fact it had been a team effort rather than relying on one specific player.

“Everybody contributed ... each and every batsman scored at some point and the same with the bowlers,” he added.

“The wickets were on the flatter side, not much for the bowlers, so they had to keep changing their plans and improvising at times and the same applied with the batsmen.

“It was a very good team effort.”

However, he did have some special words for opening batsman Gautam Gambhir and pace bowler Zaheer Khan, who were both at the forefront of the series win.

“Both of them, they keep on improving each game they play,” said Dhoni. “They look to improve. They raise the bar wherever they are performing.”
Gambhir blossoms

Gambhir was the top performing batsman of the tour, despite having only cemented his place in the Test side after a strong series against Sri Lanka in the middle of last year and a barrage of runs since.

His second innings 137 in the second Test in Napier guided India to the safety of a draw after New Zealand ran up a massive 619 for nine in the first innings and dismissed the visitors for 305 in their first knock.

By the end of the Test series, he had accumulated 445 runs at an average of 89.0, eclipsing the effort of Sachin Tendulkar who finished with 344 runs at an average of 68.8.

Master off-spinner Harbhajan Singh finished the series with 16 wickets at an average of 21.37 runs per wicket. His best innings saw him grabbing six wickets for just 63 runs.

Left-arm pace bowler Zaheer was second in India’s bowling ranks, garnering 13 wickets at an average cost of 30.76 runs in the three-Test series, including a best performance of five for 65 in New Zealand’s first innings in Wellington.
Praise for Zaheer

“Zak (Khan) has been brilliant for the last two years. He has bowled well everywhere, not only in India,” Dhoni said.

“He helps the other bowlers and it has been fantastic to see the way he has bowled, whether the wicket is helping him or not.”

Dhoni also praised the work of the lower order batsmen, who were instrumental, particularly in Wellington where India was 204 for six in its first innings before a late rush of runs took them to 379.

“The lower order contribution was very important because that really takes the morale of the team up, and whenever it was needed from them, the lower order really contributed.”

India acts, answers Pak questions on 26/11

New Delhi: The Indian government is ready with answers to the 30 questions Pakistan had asked about the terrorist attacks in Mumbai last November.

The Home Ministry has prepared a document which includes the DNA reports of Ajmal Kasab, the only terrorist caught alive, and the nine other gunmen killed in the attack. The document has 32 answers.

The document was given to External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Friday. "We have put together answers to 30 questions submitted by Pakistan. It is a very comprehensive document, answering each of the 30 questions," said Home Minister P Chidambaram.

Chidambaram said the answers are supported by documentary proof, CDs and forensic evidence, which are adequate to help investigations into the attacks. "If Pakistan is serious to investigate the origins of the horrific crime in Mumbai, these answers provide solid basis. We expect Pakistan to take the investigation forward quickly," he said after giving the report to Mukherjee .

Media reports say Pakistan had asked a range of questions, ranging from what Kasab said in his confession before a Mumbai court and how did the terrorists manage to reach Mumbai in a boat ditching Indian Navy.

Pakistan has admitted that “a part” of the terrorist conspiracy was hatched in its territory and its Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is probing the attacks.

Pakistan has banned an Islamic charity accused of being a front for the Lashkar-e-Toiba, which India claims organised and plotted the attacks on Mumbai.

Lashker-e-Taiba leaders Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, Zarar Shah, Abu al Qama and Hamad Amin Sadiq are in custody of the Pakistani police in connection with the Mumbai attacks.

ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa only if financially viable

Johannesburg, March 13: The International Cricket Council (ICC) decision to shift the Champions Trophy series from Pakistan to South Africa because of security concerns will only take place if Cricket South Africa (CSA) is not left with a huge bill, as had been the case in past tournaments, according to CSA chief executive Gerald Majola.

“We don`t want to host the tournament and eventually sit with a huge account,” Majola told the an African daily, even as he confirmed that South Africa had the infrastructure and expertise to play host to the 11 other nations in the Champions Trophy.

“If the ICC can assure us that this will not happen and that we will benefit financially from it, there is no problem with hosting it here,” Majola said, adding that he wanted a clause about the host fee going to Pakistan to be amended as well.

The ICC has reportedly decided that Pakistan also needs to benefit financially because the tournament had been taken away from the country.

“There will also have to be more money invested in security and I want the assurance that those costs will be carried (by the ICC).”

“In the past, with the World Cup and Twenty20 series, we heard afterwards what the hosting thereof had cost and we had to pay the accounts. I learnt my lesson from (those experiences) and will not be caught out like that again. That`s why I will now ensure that all costs are covered by the ICC,” said Majola.

A final decision is expected Monday and South Africa will be the host if the ICC provides the financial security that has been requested.

Recent violence in Pakistan, including the attack on the visiting Sri Lankan team, has caused serious security concerns about hosting tournaments there. The Champions Trophy scheduled to be held in Pakistan last year was cancelled.

The ICC has ruled out Sri Lanka as a new venue because of the heavy rains there at the time the tournament is proposed. The weather pattern in South Africa at that time - September and october - is considered to be ideal for the 12-day tournament.

Dhoni's men determined to wrap up the series on a high

Auckland, March 13: With the series already in their pocket, India may opt to rest some of their key players as they go into the fifth and final one-dayer against a demoralised New Zealand on Saturday, hoping to finish it off on a winning note.

The Indians have already taken an invincible 3-0 lead in the five match series and will be keen to try out their reserve players for the inconsequential game at the Eden Park.

Sachin Tendulkar, who sat out of the last game because of an abdomen injury, is likely to be rested for the match so that he is fully fit for the Test series beginning March 18.

While things have gone favourably for the Indians, the Kiwis have only pride to play for as they desperately need to salvage a win to convince the home fans of their limited-overs potential, especially after recording six consecutive series wins at home.

However, India coach Gary Kirsten has already made it clear that he is no mood to take the game lightly and would like to carry forward the momentum of the ODI series to the three upcoming Tests.

“It is important to maintain momentum and win games of cricket. That might require us to use our best combination. We also need to be mindful of the fact that it might be an opportunity to rest one or two players. We just have to weigh up what we want to do but we haven`t decided yet,” Kirsten said.

India are set to make some changes in their playing eleven and in all probability left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha and Irfan Pathan are likely to get a game before they return home alongwith Yusuf Pathan, Praveen Kumar and Rohit Sharma on Sunday.

While Irfan played in the Twenty20 series, which India lost 0-2, Ojha so far has had little to do on this tour, other than roll his arm over at the nets.

And this will come as an ideal opportunity for Ojha to win the selectors` confidence. A poor show in the match would provide the leeway for Ravindra Jadeja, who has the making of a competitive all-rounder, to stake a claim for the second spinner`s slot in India`s ODI scheme of things.

The Indian team management is also likely to give Zaheer Khan, who did the bulk of the work in Ishant Sharma`s injury-forced absence during the ODIs, a break before the Test series and draft in Irfan in his place.

Tendulkar`s participation in the final ODI also looks doubtful as the team management is in no mood to aggravate his his abdomen injury ahead of the Test series. The batting maestro also missed the fourth ODI in Hamilton after suffering the injury during his majestic knock of 163 in Christchurch.

“We are not sure yet. We will have to wait and see,” said Kirsten.

If Tendulkar is rested, India will go in with Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir at the top of the order. And if the Delhi-twosome, who were involved in a rollicking 201-run partnership for the first wicket at the Hamilton on Wednesday, maintain their momentum, India should complete a Kiwi sweep, similar to the 5-0 drubbing they gave England last season.

It will be interesting to see how many balls disappear in Saturday`s day-night affair at the small but petite Eden Park ground, whose square boundaries are a lot shorter than Christchurch, where a record number of sixes were blasted in the Twenty20 (24) and one-day (31) match of the series.

There is also a possibility of Sehwag, who has been in the form of his life, to score a double hundred, something that he spoke about after his 60-ball hundred in the last match.

The Kiwis would be eyeing a consolation win to boost their morale ahead of the Test series and skipper Daniel Vettori is determined to avoid a 4-0 drubbing in front of the home crowds.

"We need to play at our best to avoid a 4-0 drubbing in front of our public and fans," said Vettori.

But considering the form of Indian batsmen, Vettori`s men will have to produce something extraordinary to stop the marauding Indian gladiators from completing a series rout.

It could possibly turn out to be the worst debacle suffered by the Kiwis in recent times, wherein their bowlers` psyche has been demolished by some free flowing Indian batting.

Teams:

India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Praveen Kumar, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Dinesh Karthik, Irfan Pathan, Pragyan Ojha.

New Zealand: Daniel Vettori (captain),Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum, Peter McGlashan, Iain O`Brien, Jacob Oram, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Grant Elliot, KYyle Mills, Ewen Thompson, Jeetan Patel.

Gunmen attack on Sri Lanka cricketers in pakistan

At least five members of the Sri Lankan cricket team have been injured in a shooting incident in the Pakistani city of Lahore, a Sri Lankan minister says.

Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge told the BBC said that early reports said indicated that the injuries to five players and a coach were minor.

The incident happened when unidentified gunmen fired on a convoy carrying Sri Lankan and Pakistani cricketers.

Unconfirmed reports say some policemen had been killed by the shooting.

Sri Lankan media reports said two of the players including Thilan Samaraweera, who scored a double century in the ongoing Test match, have been taken to hospital.

The convoy was carrying Pakistani and Sri Lankan cricketers to the Gaddafi stadium, which is hosting a Test match between the two sides. The third day of play in the Second Test was scheduled to begin.
"It appears that our team bus was targeted on the way to the match. It appears that four of our cricketers have been injured and taken to the hospital," a Sri Lankan cricket official told an Indian TV channel from Colombo.

TV pictures showed two gunmen with backpacks on the road where the incident happened.

An eyewitness told Reuters news agency that three policemen and a traffic warden had been killed in the incident.

Shop owner Ahmed Ali said two policemen had been driving behind the team bus when the attack happened.

"It was a very heavy firing and I heard at least two explosions at the time," an eyewitness told Reuters.

Pakistani invited Sri Lanka to tour after India's cricket team pulled out of a scheduled cricket tour following the deadly November attacks in the western Indian city of Mumbai.

Tendulkar has 16,440 ODI runs, 6765 more than New Zealand's 12 players together. Can he make any difference?

India Have won 9 out of their last 10 ODIs.But After two successive losts in the T20 india is going to take on NZ in ODIs.Which form we can consider should we consider India have lost their lst 2 matches(infact 3, including last ODI with SL) or India have won 9 out of last 10 ODIs.
What might be the result of First ODI.Can Indians won the first match?

Also, the news is that Ishanth is not going to play the first ODI.How much it will effect indian bowling.I think indian pace men were really struggled to take wickets in T20 matches.Who could be the replacement for Ishath..is i tPraveen Kumar or Munaf patel?

And also sachin is playing in the First ODI.Tendulkar has 16,440 ODI runs, 6765 more than New Zealand's 12 players together. Can he make any difference?

India need to won first ODI on tomorrow,if not they will be depressed a lot and it has huge impact on remaining ODIs.
Thank you,

Slumdog Millionaire Oscar awards

New Delhi/Mumbai, Feb. 23: President Pratibha Patil today congratulated the team of 'Slumdog Millionaire' which created sensation by winning eight Oscars.

The President is happy that 'Slumdog Millionaire' has won Oscars in various categories. She congratulated the winning team, a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson said.

"The President is specially thrilled with the remarkable feat achieved by A.R. Rahman, Gulzar, Resul Pookutty and making India proud," the spokesperson said.

The film bagged eight awards including two Oscars for Rahman for Best Original Score and Best Song for "Jai Ho", which was penned by lyricist Gulzar.

Pookutty, a sound technician from Kerala, won the Oscar in the Sound Mixing category. The film went on to bag the award for Best Film, Best Director for Danny Boyle and Best Adapted Screenplay for Simon Beaufoy.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi congratulated the 'Slumdog Millionaire' team, particularly Rehman and Resul Pookutty.

"I am delighted that A.R. Rehman and Resul Pookutty have won this year's much coveted Oscars for music and sound editing. They have done India proud, as have all the Indian actors, technicians and support staff who participated in the making of 'Slumdog Millionaire'," Gandhi said in a statement.

"They represent the finest traditions of our film industry and are an inspiration to all of us," she said.

Home minister P. Chidambaram favoured tax exemption to two Oscars bagged by Rahman for 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

"If the Oscars carry a cash award, I will recommend to the finance minister that it should be exempt from taxation," Chidambaram, who is also former finance minister, said.

When asked whether such tax exemption would be given, CBDT chairman S.S.N. Moorthy refused a direct reply, saying this is a policy decision.

As Rahman and Pookutty scripted history, members of the film fraternity joined voices to applaud the enviable feat achieved by the duo.

Lyricist Gulzar, who penned the Oscar-winning song 'Jai ho' for which Rahman won an Oscar, said, "It is a great thing to be a part of this composition which has won an award. It is an extra happiness and extra thrill for me."

"My first reaction was surprise and thrill but as soon as the programme started my bet was on Rahman. I am very happy for Resul, another Indian technician who brought home the Oscar," said Gulzar, whose name was mentioned by the award presenter Alicia Keys while announcing the nominees.

"What a film and what a team to work with. The spirit of the film is reflected in its team," he said and crediting Rahman with "changing the entire face of Indian film music".

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar hailed Rahman saying, "May he win such an award every year. He is a genius. Rahman's music is a blend of a little South Indian music and what we commonly call Hindi film music."

Sister and veteran singer Asha Bhonsle, who has sung for Rahman in many films, said, "Rahman is a genius and has made the world sit up and take notice of Indian talent with his success. He has put the Indian film industry on the world map."

Chennai, the home city of Rahman, erupted into spontaneous celebrations as the music maestro bagged two Oscars for his score in 'Slumdog Millionaire' at the 81st Academy Awards.

As TV channels flashed the news of the Mozart of Madras bagging the coveted award, his fans celebrated it cutting cakes, distributing sweets and bursting crackers.

Family members of Rahman and his fans cut a huge cake right in the middle of the street opposite his house in the Kodambakkam area and burst "10,000 wala" crackers.

Students of several city colleges also joined the celebrations distributing sweets while the film fraternity, including leading singers, hailed his achievement.

Similar scenes of celebrations were witnessed at the house of Rahman's sister Rehana in nearby Virugambakkam area.

"We were just waiting for his name to be announced. I was praying to God at that time," an elated Rehana said.

"I always wanted him to talk in Tamil after receiving the award and that is the way he spoke; I am happy about it," she said overwhelmed by joy.

Rehana said formal celebrations would be planned after Rahman's return in consultation with his managers, team and fans.

Residents of Dharavi locality here were glued to the TV screens to celebrate the magical run of 'Slumdog Millionaire,' whose backdrop is their locality.

"We plan to celebrate the win. There will be a party tonight. In fact, people are already in a celebratory mood," said Azhar Shaikh, who has been living in Dharavi for the past decade.

Danny Boyle's film is a stark look at Dharavi slum, where lakhs of people live in a square kilometre area.

Family of Rubina, who plays little Latika in the film, is readying to greet her after she returns from the Oscars ceremony.

"We will all be there at the airport when she returns," her father Rafique said.

His neighbours are also happy that the film, shot in their locality, has cornered Oscar glory.

The film had received mixed response across India as some slum dwellers found it offensive, with some critics even labelling it as "poverty porn".

Some like Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen said the movie shows reality.

"When I see 'Slumdog...', I say Mercedes as well as a bullock cart run on the streets of my country," she said

Slumdog Millionaire won 8 Oscar Awards

Los Angeles (Agencies): A.R. Rahman, Gulzar, Slumdog Millionaire and Smile Pinky made it Day of India at the Oscars with the Mozart of Madras winning two awards for original score and best song along with Gulzar.

An ecstatic Rahman perfomed his O Saya and Jai Ho as he accepted the awards.

India-based Slumdog Millionaire and Smile Pinky won seven awards together on Sunday. While Slumdog... won the best original score, best song, best adapted screenplay, best cinematography, best sound mixing and best film editing statuettes, Pinky won the best short documentary.

India's Resul Pokutty, who won the best sound mixing Oscar for Slumdog... along with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke, dedicated the award for the country.

LOS ANGELES: Slumdog Millionaire is arriving at the last stop in its rags-to-riches journey, steaming into the Academy Awards as the surefire favourite.

In keeping with its theme of bottomless optimism amid adversity, it has led a charmed life, dodging a flirtation with going straight-to-DVD, winning over critics and climbing toward a $100 million hit status. The film has won top honours at all key earlier awards ceremonies, with one to go.

As Sunday dawned under grey skies here, with rain threatening to dampen the red carpet for the second year in a row and Hollywood’s latest labour feud kicking up fresh news of another contract rejection, it seemed nothing could drag down the year’s most uplifting storyline.

Now its cast of unknowns — from new celebrities Dev Patel and Freida Pinto to kids plucked by British director Danny Boyle from the slums of Mumbai, India — are all getting a trip to Hollywood’s glitziest party.

For best picture, Slumdog Millionaire faces off against the romantic epic The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the Richard Nixon saga Frost/Nixon, the Harvey Milk tale Milk and the Holocaust-themed drama The Reader.

Shot in India on a modest budget of $14 million, the Boyle film traces the life of a Mumbai orphan who overcomes poverty, betrayal, police torture and other hardships on his way to a reunion with his childhood love and success on India’s version of the TV game show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”

After last year’s Oscars delivered their worst TV ratings ever, producers this time say they aim to liven up the show with some surprises and new ways of presenting awards. While some details have surfaced in the past week, most plans have remained a secret, including the identities of celebrities who are presenting the trophies.

The host is no secret. The producers have tapped 40-year-old Australian entertainer Hugh Jackman, who has hosted Broadway’s Tony Awards three times, to emcee the Oscars for the first time.

“If I hadn’t done the Tonys, I think I’d be a lot more nervous than I am,” Jackman said.

Sunday’s ceremony, airing live on the ABC television network, features a mix of fresh faces and old Oscar hands in the acting categories.

Two-time winner Meryl Streep extended her record to 15 nominations, this time for best actress in Doubt, while other past Oscar recipients and nominees include Sean Penn (best actor for Milk, Kate Winslet (best actress for The Reader, Robert Downey Jr. (supporting actor for Tropic Thunder and Philip Seymour Hoffman (supporting actor for Doubt)

Newcomers include a rush of veteran performers, among them best-actress contenders Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married) and Melissa Leo (Frozen River) and best-actor candidates Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon) and Richard Jenkins (The Visitor).

The Dark Knight co-star Heath Ledger is considered as strong a candidate for supporting actor as Slumdog Millionaire is for best picture and director. Ledger, who died on Oscar nominations day last year, took comic-book villains to new heights with his delirious incarnation of Batman foe the Joker.

Past winner Angelina Jolie and her man, Brad Pitt, both are nominated. She’s up for best actress in Changeling and he’s competing for best actor in Benjamin Button, which leads with 13 nominations, followed by Slumdog with 10

Iran plans to build world's largest artificial beach

Kerman (Iran): Iran plans to build the world's largest artificial beach in this provincial capital city in central Iran, an official said Wednesday.

Director of Kerman's Ashkan water park Arash Salehi said that the 60,000-square-metre project is to be constructed at a cost 160 billion rials ($16 million) and it would be larger than the world's largest artificial beach at present, called the Ocean Dome, in the Japanese city of Miyazaki that has an area of 56,000-square-metre.
Salehi added that a water park would also be built in the Kerman within seven months and added that Iran has talked to some Indian and Chinese experts for carrying out the project.

Kerman, some 1,076 km south of the capital Tehran, is a popular tourist hub.

Satyam recalls 1,500 onsite staff as clients call off contracts

New Delhi: As clients cancelled contracts with troubled Satyam computers, more than 1,500 employees of the company working overseas have been called back to India. Followed by Rs. 7,800 crore scam in Satyam, many foreign clients have terminated their contract with the company, reported The Economic Times.

About 170 employees who were working for State Farm Insurance, an Illinois-based insurance company, have already returned to Satyam headquarters in Hyderabad, as State Farm Insurance terminated the contract with Satyam. Most of the employees were technical and support staff that were involved in delivery management and support. "The disengagement took place in an abrupt manner. Satyam staffers were not allowed to access the computers and their belongings after termination of the contract," said a Satyam executive.

According to the company executive, some other larger clients such as Philadelphia-based Cigna Corporation, Melbourne-based Telstra, Sydney-based Qantas airlines and Atlanta-based Coca-Cola have also started disengaging from the company, resulting in over 1,500 employee redundancies across Satyam's onshore operations in the U.S. and Asia Pacific. Satyam gets more than $300 million revenue from these four clients.

Indicating further cost-cutting measures in future, another senior executive of Satyam said that there would be a lot of restructuring as business overseas has been severely impacted and hence workforce rationalization is definitely on the cards. "Investments in training and development and infrastructure will be brought down significantly," executive added.

Employees, concerned over the future, have started to approach various employee organizations to resolve the problem. For instance, UNITES, an organization working for the rights of IT employees has received several queries from Satyam employees based in the U.S., U.K. and Japan about how they should go about finding a solution to the current crisis.

26/11: Pak files FIR, admits many Indian charges, plot on its soil

Islamabad, Feb 12: Pakistan admitted on Thursday that at least part of the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai were planned in Pakistan but a major part was done in India.

Announcing that the Pakistan government had lodged an FIR in connection with the Mumbai terror attacks, interior ministry chief Rehman Malik said that Pakistan had identified the main conspirators in the attack as Zaki-ur Rahman Lakhvi and Zarar Shah of the Lashker-e-Tayyabba.

“Some part of the conspiracy was plotted in Pakistan,” Malik stated. He said that the Lashkar-e-Tayyabba was involved in the attacks.

Three persons have been named in the FIR lodged under Anti-Terrorism Act, said Malik. Hamad Ameen Sadiq, who facilitated money transfer for the terrorist attack in Mumbai, has been arrested.

A Pakistani national, Javed Iqbal, who acquired the VoIP (voice over internet protocol) phones for Mumbai attackers in Spain, was also arrested.

Three boats were used from Pakistan to reach Mumbai. The engine of the rubber boat that brought the terrorists to Mumbai had been traced to a shop in Lahore, he acknowledged.

Pakistan had identified the boat that took the terrorists to the high seas, and was interrogating its crew. It had changed its name to cover its tracks.

He said the safehouses and training grounds had been identified in Pakistan. He said that Ajmal Kasab had been booked under the anti-terror Act.

He said the internet communication had been traced to Spain. The server of emails send by the terrorists was based in the USA.

The Pakistani reply to the dossier provided by India on the 26/11 attacks had been handed over to New Delhi, he said.

Mr Malik said that the Pakistan government had acted on information given by the Indian government and "had gone the extra mile." This "proves our sincerity in fighting terror," he said.

He said more information was needed on many aspects, including how the terrorists came to posses "7-10" Indian SIM cards.

He wanted details from India on how the boat carrying the terrorists was refuelled in the high seas.

Pakistan wanted the DNA samples of all the 10 terrorists including Kasab to establish their identity.

He said more informaton was needed on certain details, including a terrorist who was only named by India as "Ali".

He said Pakistan needed information from the US, Spain, Italy and Russia, from where the terrorists had routed their resources.

Earlier, Pakistan's response to the Indian dossier was handed over the the Indian high commissioner to Pakistan, Mr Satyabrata Pal, by Mr Malik.

The meeting took place a day after there was confusion over reports that Pakistani authorities had filed a case against Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive during the November 26, Mumbai attacks and 12 others in connection with the strikes. The government had denied those reports.

Giant blast shakes up city

Feb. 9: A loud explosion at a chemicals unit on Monday night triggered fears of largescale damage and sent emergency services, and the media, into a frenzy. It turned out later that two persons were injured in the explosion at SM Labs Pvt Ltd, a drug intermediates manufacturing company at Moula Ali.

The Alwal DCP, Mr Sudheer Reddy, said there were no deaths. The blast was attributed to a petrochemical-based solvent used in manufacturing medicines. The shockwaves from the blast was felt even 10 km away. Smoke engulfed the area, window panes of many buildings developed cracks and some buildings in the vicinity shook. “I could not breathe properly,” said Mr Jitender Red-dy, a local.

Five fire engines and three water tenders battled the blaze for three hours to bring the fire under control. Eight ambulances were rushed to the site.

According to a witness, Mr Mohammed Ismail, there was a huge explosion at 9 pm. “We rushed into the factory and brought two injured. As there was fire and smoke nothing could be seen,” he added.

The factory which manufactures anti-depressant drugs to Dr Reddy Labs and Cipla, is owned by Mr Manik Reddy. It makes intermediary drugs used in manufacturing 5-cyanophthalide. The fire occurred in the storage tank. Mr Manik Reddy said eight persons were working when the accident occurred and two were injured: Sravan Kumar (26) and Niranjan (27).

Mr Niranjan who was admitted to Poulami Hospital said they ran outside after the blast. “A big stone like missile hit me on my stomach. I fell unconscious after that,” he said.
Thousands of locals thro-nged the spot and police had to cordon off the area.

Locals said they had alerted the factory management about an “unbearable, pungent, chemical odour” on Sunday. The IDA canteen proprietor, Mr P. Praveen, said, “Gas was leaking for a few days.” According to sources, the ACB had arrested an inspector of boilers two years ago on charge of accepting Rs 75,000 as bribe for renewing licences for three boilers at SM Laboratories.

Raju has it tough with Sebi

Feb. 4: The interrogation of Mr B. Ramalinga Raju by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), which began on Wednesday, wou-ld have come as quite a change for the man who had it easy with CID officials.

Unlike at the CID questioning, where officials were not allowed to carry a pen and paper, where Mr Raju’s counsel were present throughout, and where questioning was restricted to an hour a day, Sebi officials proved to be tougher.

Mr Raju was grilled by a five-member team from the Sebi, led by Mr Sunil Kumar. Mr Raju’s counsel, Mr S. Bharat Kumar, was not allowed into the room. The questioning was primarily about alleged insider trading, sources said.

Sources said Mr Raju was mostly quizzed about transaction of Satyam shares in the last six months. It is learnt that Mr Raju answered most questions in the negative.

Jail officials said they provided a room with a table and few chairs for the exercise. According to sources, he was quizzed at the jail superintendent’s office. The questioning session began at 10.30 am and went on till evening with a one-hour lunch break thrown in.
Outside the jail, Mr Raju’s counsel, Mr S. Bharat Kumar, said the Sebi team had turned down his request to provide Mr Raju some documents. He said Mr Raju did not have documents to answer Sebi’s questions. He said they would question the validity of statements recorded by Sebi. It is learnt that Mr Raju was briefed by his defence lawyers on Tuesday on answering Sebi’s questions.

It is learnt that Mr Raju’s brother, Mr B. Rama Raju, will be interrogated on Thursday. Elsewhere, the two Pricewaterhouse officials, Mr S. Gopalakrishnan and Mr T. Srinivas were handed over to police custody at 10.30 am on Wednesday. The custody period will end at 4 pm on Thursday.

SEBI grills Ramalinga Raju

HYDERABAD: Officials of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on Wednesday interrogated the former chairman of Satyam Computers, B. Ramalinga Raju, for nearly five hours at the Chanchalguda Central Jail here.

SEBI general manager A. Sunil Kumar, who is the divisional chief for southern States, grilled Mr. Raju with the assistance of four officers.

The SEBI team walked into the jail at 9.45 a.m. and left only at 7 p.m. though the actual interrogation lasted only from 11.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a break for lunch.
Rama Raju not quizzed

Mr. Ramalinga Raju’s brother and former managing director Rama Raju was not quizzed. The SEBI has been permitted by the Supreme Court to examine the two for three days.

Officials of the market regulator did not permit Mr. Ramalinga Raju’s advocate S. Bharat Kumar to be present during the interrogation, though he entered the jail with the permission of Superintendent M. Chandrasekhar.

Later, talking to the media, Mr. Kumar took exception to the denial of legal assistance to the accused during the examination.

He held that the two accused were not in possession of records. Neither were they in a proper state of mind to depose.

He said the apex court issued ex-parte orders permitting their interrogation before these exceptions were brought to its notice.
To file petition

He said Mr. Raju’s counsel would file a petition in the Supreme Court seeking remedy.

The Crime Investigation Department picked up from the same jail suspended Price Waterhouse partners S. Gopalakrishnan and Talluri Srinivas for interrogation. They will be in its custody till Thursday afternoon.

The officials questioned the two on their job chart and whether they verified cash and bank balances of Satyam Computer Services periodically.

A senior officer told The Hindu that the focus of interrogation was on whether they properly vouched for the related party transactions under the Indian Companies Act.
Foreign remittances

Another important area of probe would be the inward foreign remittances made to the company on account of operations in 60 countries.

The role of auditors in verification of softex forms (proof of company’s turnover) submitted to the Software Technology Parks of India for claiming income-tax benefits would also come under scrutiny.

Yuvraj Singh (117 runs of 95 balls) and Virendra Sehwag (116 runs of 90 balls) scored a swashbuckling century to help India to clinch the IDBI Fortis Wealthinsurance cup. Within six months time this is second time that India able to win the ODI Series against the home team.
Electing to bat first India scored a mammoth total of 363/5 in their allotted 50 overs with the help of blistering third wicket stand between Yuvraj Singh and Virendra Sehwag. The duo went on to put record 221 runs stand for the third wicket of just 167 balls.

Both Yuvraj and Sehwag looks in sensational form and some poor Sri Lankan fielding did allow both of them at start of their inning but after that it was all Viru and Yuvi who murdered Sri Lankan bowling attack and both went on to score blistering century. After being reduced to 24/2 in the fourth over with Sachin Tendulkar once again adjudged leg before for third consecutive time and G.Gambhir unluckily run out, Sri Lanka looks on top at that stage it was Yuvraj Singh who cornered most of the strike, stroking some magnificent boundaries on either side of the wicket.

Sehwag was spectator in the early part of their partnership but once both get going it was nightmare for the Sri Lankan bowlers. Once the duo was dismissed it was up to M.S.Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan to guide India to safe target. Both did what exactly required by putting 85 runs in 69 balls. Yusuf Pathan went on to score his second fifty in one day international with four 4’s and one huge six over long on boundary, while Dhoni remain unbeaten on 35 runs.

During Indian innings M.Muralitharan also went onto equal the world record of Wasim Akram when he dismissed Yuvraj Singh in the 32nd over and now he is just a wicket away from becoming the leading wicket taker in ODI.

Chasing the mammoth total, Sri Lanka folded for 216 in 41.4 overs, despite Kumar Sangakara 83 runs of 82 balls not able to snatch unlikely victory from the hands of Indians. Pragyan Ojha did most of the damage to Sri Lankan batting as he went on to pick four crucial Sri Lankan wickets by conceding just 38 runs in his quota of 10 overs.

Chasing such a huge total, Sri Lanka badly needed a big knock from Sanath Jayasuriya but the veteran opener let the side down today. But Sanath Jayasurya is also not able to handle the pressure of chasing huge target as he dragged P.Kumar ball onto his stump to in the 2nd over of Sri Lankan inning to get out for 1st ball duck.

Tillakaratne Dilshan (30 off 26 balls) sizzled for a while in Sangakkara's company before an inside edge off Zaheer Khan upset his timbers. Like Dilshan, Sri Lankan captain M.Jayawardne also got the start but with the asking run rate mounting all the time he tried something unnatural to throw his wicket away to P.Kumar.

Last match hero T.Kadamby also didn’t last longer as he got out while playing reverse sweep on the bowling of V.Sehwag and in the very next over P.Ojha bowled C.Kapugedara to tighten the noose around the host.

India now takes an unbeatable lead of 3-0 in five match ODI series against Sri Lanka and now they would like to give the chance to some of the other players like L.Balaji and I.Pathan in the next match. Next match will be played at same venue on 5th of February which will be another day/night encounter.

Yuvraj Singh was declared Man of the Match for his swashbuckling centuries of 117 runs of 95 balls.
